Washington's oldest hotel, still taking guests
In 1885 Lizzie Brown and her husband William Kindred finished a two-story wood farmhouse with a gabled roof and a brick fireplace on the point at the north end of Willapa Bay. It became an inn, then a resort hotel, and it has been taking guests ever since — which makes it the oldest continuously run hotel in Washington State. Lizzie's family had homesteaded fourteen hundred acres out here from 1858, farming and trading alongside the Shoalwater Bay people whose name the bay carried before it became Willapa. Toke Point was a genuine resort destination once, with a steamer landing and summer crowds. The hotel is the only building left from that era. It is still a hotel and still a restaurant, and it is comfortably the most atmospheric building on the South Beach. It also has a reputation for being haunted, which the staff will neither confirm nor particularly deny.
