The point the whole town was built on
Point Chehalis is the hook of land that closes the south side of the harbor entrance. Everything Westport is followed from it: the harbor needed guarding, so the Life-Saving Service put a station here in 1897; ships needed a mark, so the lighthouse was lit in 1898; boats needed shelter, so the basin was dredged. It carried other names and other uses first. Robert Gray came into this harbor in May 1792 and the harbor took his name. Old Fort Chehalis stood out here from 1860, and a tablet marks where it was and the infantry company that occupied it. In the Second World War the Army held the point against an attack that never came. What is out here now is the working end of it — the Coast Guard station, the jetty, the light, and the water where the bar begins. Stand at the point and you can see the whole reason for the town in one sweep.
