Johns River Pioneer Cemetery

A settlers' cemetery at the end of an old road

The Johns River valley was settled by farming and logging families working the land behind the Grays Harbor tide flats. Their cemetery is still there, in among the second growth. Reaching it is part of the visit. From the gravel lot on the east side of the river, an old road runs roughly two miles back through the trees, opening onto river views along the way and ending at the burial ground. It is a walk more than a destination, and it is one of the quietest ones on the South Beach. Take water and expect mud after rain.
