See all Things to DoThe cemetery the ocean took back
North Cove is the community better known as Washaway Beach, where the shoreline has been losing ground at a rate of roughly a hundred feet a year — the fastest-eroding shoreline on the West Coast. The original pioneer cemetery was in the path of it. The sea reached the graves, coffins came out of the bank and drifted onto the shore, and they were collected and reburied at the site the cemetery occupies now, on the east side of Highway 105. It is a small, quiet place and it takes ten minutes. It is also the plainest illustration on this coast of what the ocean does here on a long enough timeline, which is why it is worth the stop.
