Stand here, shoot through the gap, help measure a beach
This is a photo station, not a sculpture, though it is both. A North Cove resident named Connie Allen set the idea up with MyCoast Washington, and a local sheet metal worker donated the labor to cut the silhouettes — the figures are modeled on actual North Cove people. Each one has an opening cut through it at a fixed height and angle. You put your phone in the opening and take the picture. Because the opening does not move, everybody's photo is framed identically, and a pile of identical photos taken across years of weather becomes something a scientist can measure. That is the trick: no tripod, no equipment, no training, and the camera you already own. What it is measuring is whether the cobble berms are working — whether this shoreline, the fastest-eroding one on the West Coast for a century, is holding the sand it has started putting back on. The stations are being upgraded with a wider window and an L-shaped cradle to hold a phone even more consistently.
