See all Things to DoA cut-out figure that turns your phone into a survey tool
The North Cove photo stations are metal cut-out figures standing along the shoreline, each with a gap cut through it at a set height and angle. Line your phone up in the gap, take the shot, and you have produced an image framed exactly like every other one taken there — last month, last winter, three years ago. Consistency is the whole value. One photo of a beach tells you nothing. Hundreds of photos of the same beach from the same spot, across seasons and storms, show you precisely how much sand arrived or left and how the cobble berms behaved while it happened. The photos go to MyCoast Washington, which keeps the database. The figures were cut by a local sheet metal worker who donated his time, and modeled on people who live here — which is a fair summary of how the whole North Cove erosion effort has been run.
