The machine that changed the cranberry harvest
Julius Furford was a Grayland cranberry farmer who worked out how to pick and prune a bog in one pass instead of two. He then built the machines himself — roughly six hundred of them over his life, and a good number are still running on bogs more than sixty years later. The museum is in the 1933 hall on Highway 105 that Grayland's Finnish community put up, and later used as a cranberry drying shed. Inside are several generations of Furford picker, including a newly built improved one, alongside the hand scoops and tools growers used before him. The CranZBerry gift shop at the front carries a few dozen cranberry products. It is a small museum about one machine, in a farm town that the machine helped keep going. That is more interesting than it sounds.
