Twelve acres of Grayland cranberry bog
The Reichenbergers have grown cranberries on this ground for generations, which in Grayland is the ordinary length of time. Twelve acres of bog, planted to McFarlin and Stevens — the two varieties that built this coast's cranberry industry after Finnish settlers took over the first tracts here in 1913 and 1914. At harvest the bogs are flooded and the berries float to the surface in a red mat. It is the image everyone has seen on a juice carton and almost nobody has stood next to. Tour tickets during harvest get you onto the farm, where a separator pulls the berries off the stems. The rest of the year it is a working farm and a quiet one. The bogs are visible from the road and they change through the season — deep green in summer, red at harvest, rust brown all winter.
