A paved dike walk into a tidal estuary
The Johns River dike trail is a little over half a mile of paved path on top of an old farm dike, running out through the river delta to a viewing and hunting blind at the end. It is flat the whole way and it is wheelchair accessible, which makes it one of very few genuinely easy walks into an estuary on this coast. What you are walking through is a 1,500-acre tidal preserve on the south edge of Grays Harbor — mudflats on one side, old freshwater cedar swamp behind the dikes on the other. Ducks, geese and shorebirds are the regulars, and there is a Caspian tern colony nearby. Winter is the busy season for birds here, and it is also waterfowl season, so you will have company on the tidelands.
