The school district for the South Beach, serving Westport, Cohassett Beach, Grayland, Markham and Tokeland. Elementary, middle and high school students all attend on one campus; the elementary opened in 1967 and was expanded in the 1980s and again in 2016. That 2016 expansion made Ocosta nationally known. Voters passed a $14 million bond in 2013 to replace the aging building, and the district used it to build the first vertical tsunami evacuation refuge in the United States: the roof of the new gymnasium, engineered to hold the community 53 feet above sea level. A Cascadia earthquake could send a wave here in about twenty minutes, which is not enough time to drive anywhere. So the school became the high ground.
